Computer-supported collaboration

What is Computer-supported collaboration

The usage of technology to support collaboration is as old as modern computer science. Early approaches by Doug Engelbart to primitive meeting support systems by using Stanford SDS 940 date back to 1967, even before the Arpanet was built (incidentally, the second computer in the Arpanet was the very same SDS 940 that Engelbart used for his collaboration system, so co-located and remote collaboration share a single piece of hardware!).

The research in this area covers all kind of collaboration by using digital media and technology, with different emphasis, from Computer-Supported Collaborative Work (CSCW) to Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) to the more recent interest in the so-called Social computing (blogs, wiki, etc.).
